Horn of Africa Organization, San Diego, CA

Horn of Africa is a community-based organization in San Diego that provides culturally and linguistically relevant services to East African refugees and immigrants, with a focus on the Somali refugee community. The organization advocates for just policies in the U.S. and in the Horn of Africa that support human rights, economic development, liberty, democracy and religious freedom for East African refugees and immigrants. Horn of Africa strives to help refugees with the assimilation and acculturation process to the U.S. in order to successfully empower families to have a new life in America while preserving and celebrating their East African/Somali culture and heritage.

Horn of Africa offers a variety of social services, including advocacy, translation and interpretation, referrals, forms assistance, youth programs, employment services, cultural preservation programs, tutoring, women’s health education and support services for families, children and the elderly. These programs are aimed at fulfilling the agency’s goals of assimilation and self-sufficiency. Since its establishment in 1995, Horn of Africa has earned a reputation among the refugee community and other agencies, as well as among funders, as being an organization that delivers its promises.
